The Merchant of Venice -Tragedy or Comedy?

Some Thoughts on The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet
I have read “Romeo and Juliet” more than ten years ago. But at that time when I read I book I only care about the story and can`t feel the charm of this book. Today when I re-read it, I still have a felling of tremor in my heart and am moved by the faithful love between Romeo and Juliet, especially their spirit of humanism that will never extinguish, as well as the artistic charm of both spoken and written language in the work. The work of Romeo and Juliet is full of humanism, which was lacked in many works, showing high level of thought in this work. Humanism is a kind of lifestyle, ideal and values, and it is a kind of noble spiritual realm for people. People should practise and pursue it at any time, so it is eternal. Today, the human society has entered the twenty-first century when material civilization has already achieved at a relatively high degree, but the rapid development of material civilization does not mean a rise of spiritual civilization; Instead, egoism, utilitarianism and money worship are eroding widely the spiritual life of human beings. Romeo and Juliet`s inflexible pursuit of humanistic spirit shows their dignity and value as human beings. This is the place where the script is exciting.3 New You Should Know
In first stage, Shakespeare wrote about 10 comedies and one tragedy, whose comedies mainly display ideal of humanists and extol love and friendship, advocate liberation of personality, marriage freedom and right of battling for happiness. Vintage-Inspired: Magnificent Jewelry At the same time, the presentation of grant betrayal powerful family concepts, fedual ethics and depressions also revealed that exposure to some of the ugly capitalism. Such comedies are”Midsummer Night’s Dream” “The Merchant of Venice” “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” “Much Ado About Nothing” “Grand hi all” and so on . Romeo And Juliet, created in 1595,was the only tragedy of this period but its inner contents corresponded to that of the comedies at this time as well. Romeo and Juliet tragically died for love, but their love is so pure and beautiful, which has finally overcome the feudal oppression and prejudice and demonstrated the dynamic life of the spirit of humanism and the final victory. Humanism is the soul of Remeo and Juliet. This play lasts forever just cause it’s full of humanism.
Trough the ups and downs of the drama conflict, numerous distinct characters and beautiful and lyric characters’ language, [Romeo and Juliet” depicts a soul-stirring love tragedy. Male and female leading characters were born in two feudal families with family feud, who fell in love with each other in an accidental meeting, but could not be marred. They seeked help from Laurence Godfather who held wedding secretly since pity and understanding. But Feudal parents Capulet orders Juliet to be married a youth noble Paris immediately. Juliet turns to Lawrence again. The priest gives dope to her and asks her to pretend dead in order to avoid this disaster. Romeo was punished to be exiled for killing Tybalt who was nephew of Lady Capulet. Romeo was so sad when gaining death news of his wife, returned to Verona with intension of suicide for love, and he suicide by taking poisons, After awaken from the coma, Juliet finds her husband dead, so she also drinks poison, dead. their tragic result makes the parents of the two families see the heavy cost of the feud, so they reconcil under the auspices of the Prince.
Viewing from this outline of the story , it can be seen that feudal parents Montague and Kaipulaite represent a decline of the well-worn feudal thought and tradition. They ignore young people’s freedom and love, which has led to hatred and conflict among families and suffered the lose of their sons and daughters. But Romeo and Juliet are on behalf of a new humanism, they had a brave and tactful struggle to the feudal ides and traditions, though the struggle was a tragedy, in return it is the victory and propagation of humanism. Besides, in this play, humanism mostly reveals from the two young roles-Romeo and Juliet. They are lovingly created by Shakespear, and it reveals his art image of humanistic idea. The love between Romeo and Juliet can startle the universe and move the gods. This kind of innocent, nobly and tragic love can outshadow many secular love stories.
The spirit of humanism in the 14-16 centuries in Europe is the philosophy and value of the bourgeoisie in the period of rising. there are many limitations of times if we see it today. But it regards humans as the “subject” and the core idea of calling for respect for human nature and value is not obsolete. Against the backdrop that “humanism spirit” is enormously lost, Romeo and Juliet still have the spiritual nourishment that we need to absorb.
About the Author
Movie review: “Life” takes baby steps into romance
“Life as We Know It” is romantic comedy pretty much as we’ve come to expect it. Yes, there are some twists, a nice comedic turn or two, but the inevitable hook-up of dueling opposites is never anything but inevitable.
Need Help comparing a Shakespeare Tragedy with a Shakespeare Comedy?
I’m trying to compare Much Ado About Nothing (the comedy), with Hamlet (the tragedy). Any ideas about how Shakespeare writes differently, resolves issues, talks about love would be MUCH appreciated!
They don’t have a lot in common. One way you can compare them perhaps is to look at the love stories in each. Ophelia and Hamlet never directly express the love they clearly feel for each other. Since Ophelia is the daughter of a courtier, she isn’t an appropriate match for Hamlet, as her father warns her. Beatrice and Benedick clearly are a fitting match, and nobody in the story is bothered by their ending up together. But in spite of that, they hide their love behind constant wordplay and exchange of insults – even when they agree to marry, it’s done in a similar vein. It’s a very unusual form of wooing.
Ophelia is also a much less fully realized character than Hamlet. This is typical of Shakespeare’s tragedies – the focus is on matters of state, male concerns, and women are largely in the background. Beatrice is a stronger character, which is quite typical for a comedy. In all the romantic comedies Shakespeare wrote in this period, the women are consistently more intelligent and dynamic than their male love interests.
