Divinity in Comedy!
“Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.”
From the umpteen sms jokes (forwards) to newspaper side columns to any young conversation on the tea stall across the street, today this opening line of Wilcox’s poem ‘Solitude’ truly holds good. In fact the mentioned make-you-laugh tools’ existence would be worthless if they don’t manage to have you displaying your pure and strong white pack of 32.
Speaking Entertainment; off late the great Indian television and films, too have been helping in this noble cause of making people feel lighter by making them burst into raptures of unrestrained laughter. On Television, it is quite evident as every third channel (including the serious business of news) we switch, we are sure to encounter someone who trying to amuse through a comedy show/laughter show/funny show that just aims to tickle your ribs and give you a passport to escape reality for a split of a second or two.
As far as films are concerned every alternate Friday you are bound to find some 70mm laughter fiesta knocking hard at the local multiplex and even if the film has a serious subject yet the comic doses at regular intervals add the right balance to a complete emotional experience. Comedy is the way of life.
Very subtlety, the theatre in the Gujarati language has always been on this comic mission; however because of the regional language it has gone unnoticed. In fact I wouldn’t be wrong if I quote that the success mantra of mixing melodrama with slapstick comedy has been the fundamental of second generation Gujarati theatre (influenced by Parsi theatre) for the last few decades now. The genres of family comedy series and social comedy being the most dominant, the artists groomed here develop unconsciously and amazing natural sense and timing for comedy. Most of the artists that you find on SAB TV today who excel in this art of making people jump off their seats and go rolling on the floor have their roots in Gujarati theatre. To name a few, Dilip Joshi, Disha Vakhani, Shyam Pathak from the comedy show ‘Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma’, Apara Mehta from the seriously maddening comedy “Sajan re Jooth mat Bolo” and last but not the least almost 90% of the cast of the SAB TV’s new comedy series that can make a fish jump out of the pond is “Papad Pol”, gaining TRP’s that comedy had forever deserved.
Comedy is an addiction, you love to laugh no matter what the reason be, “Khichdi, a family based comedy drama about a crazy Guajarati family is a classic example of the boundaries comedy can cross and the impact on the peoples life, Khichdi gained the love of its audiences in the world of TV and further to magnify the experience of laughter without strings they showcased their wit on the 70 mm curtain raiser, probably creating history in the world of entertainment. Once again right from the director to the actors, all had their first affair with the Gujarati theatre stage.
I wouldn’t be exaggerating over the fact that today Gujarati theatre artists have brought a new definition to comedy especially on SAB TV. It’s indeed a joyride for all.
So it seems comedy is the new – old name of the game and I guess it is quite a fair game, after all the mach speed lifestyle led by majority of us will not allow us give a piece of mind and easy coherence to Dante’s ultimate comedy…
So be it, let’s go laughing all the way! It is the best medicine they say!

It’s all really very shameful that these people in spite of being hindus, they don’t respect their own culture, they make fun of ‘divine deeds’ done by their own God.
