Mitchell & Webb On the Advantages of Making Comedy Radio

One thing that should always be remembered about comedy is that you should never take it seriously. If you do, you’re likely to end up with egg over own face, as well as provoking ire from others – and not just the comic whose gag you didn’t “get”.
A perfect example is the ruckus that ensued when American standup comedian Robin Williams made a humorous observation about Australians on David Letterman’s talk show. “They’re basically English rednecks” he joked, before launching into a hilarious routine with his trademark rapid fire delivery and extreme vocal stereotypes. The live audience roared, as did millions across the globe watching in their living rooms.
But not everyone was laughing. Kevin Rudd, Australia’s Prime Minister, took offence to the jibe. “I think Robin Williams should go and spend a bit of time in Alabama before he frames comments about anyone being particularly redneck,” he sniffed.
One can only wonder at his motivations. Perhaps he was genuinely offended. This is a possibility, since he himself is a Queenslander. People from that state are often quite touchy about its reputation. After all, Aussies from other states do tend to think of Queenslanders as country bumpkins, and rural Queensland is often derisively referred to as the “Deep North”.
But the more likely reason is that he thought he could get some political advantage out of appearing to patriotically defend his nation’s honor. Rudd has battled a persistent perception that he doesn’t think much of his own country and that his first loyalty is to the United Nations. Condemning Williams could have seemed like a good way of getting those Aussie battlers on “Struggle Street” back on side.
If this was his intention, it almost certainly backfired. I listened to talk-back radio – always a good gauge of what average Australians are thinking – in the days after the controversy erupted. While some callers were offended by the comic’s routine, the vast majority thought it was hilarious.
Chris Smith, a popular daytime broadcaster on Sydney’s 2GB, played an audiotape of it several times, and many people called in to say how funny it was. One even phoned from his car and said that he’d just seen other people in their own cars at a traffic light laughing out loud while the routine was playing on the radio!
But Rudd made his po-faced pronouncement anyway. Not only did he show himself to be humorless; he also upped the ante, since he – unlike Williams – was being serious. And by being so he then offended his Alabamian equivalent!
The Governer of that state, Bob Riley, issued this statement: “I’m not sure if Prime Minister Rudd has ever been to Alabama. If he has, he would know that Alabamians are decent, hard working, creative people. That’s why Alabama is home to Australian companies like Austral which employs more than 1000 Alabamians at the world’s largest aluminium shipyard.”
While this was hardly a major international conflict, it was unfortunate. And it needn’t have happened at all if Rudd had just taken the gag as it was originally intended.
Politicians should take note of this curious event and remember to keep their sense of humor. If every world leader were as easy to offend as Rudd was, then comedians could end up sparking a world war! And that wouldn’t be funny at all.
