Now that Obama is a few months into his term, and Dubya jokes are quickly fading from memory – let's just agree that the former president was not, how shall we say, cerebral – I just can not pin our collective mess at the man. What was most of us do, while the country was being run into the ground? Searching for the next "American Idol"? Spelling as a fifth-degree? Waiting for the next pop tart's wardrobe malfunction?

Let's face it team, we have not exactly been top of our game. But the times they are a-changing-room '.

Courted by the refreshing sound of a president and his fundamental knowledge of the English language, I listened to President Obama speaks openly to our growing obstacles during a press conference februar. And while the state of our nation unsettles me, I find solace in our leader's unwavering determination, vision and most of all, his intelligence. Then it struck me: It's cool to be smart.Has President Obama unilaterally inspired a nation to pull your head out of his ass? A small sign that we are longing to think again:

1st Our "That Girl" is smart. We can not get enough of Tina Fey. She might be easy on the eyes, but it is not what we first noticed her. We love Fey because she made it fun to think about the issues we have preferred to ignore. She cleverly and courageously used the international scene to say the things we were dying to hear.

2nd The ultimate way authority says so. Vogue dedicated several pages of the January issue of Katie Couric, Campbell Brown and Rachel Maddow. And not in an investigative "What designers-are-in-your-toilets, ladies?" sort of way. No, it's all business areas. Vogue celebrates women turn transmit news, pushing the boundaries and take the lead on difficult issues.

3rd The frivolous take heed. Meet Recessionista, formerly known as Fashionista. They have given up Carrie Bradshaw's financial credo – "I like my money where I can see it: hanging in my closet "- the more conservative signals from people like Suze Orman … who, I promise, will never tell you Manolo Blah Nope is sound investment.

4th Demetri Martin. Have not heard of him yet? Pay attention. Strange politics-free and stolen smart, his new show, important things that made his Comedy Central debut in last months .. "New York" magazine sums it up best, "So if the last election signaled a free-floating desire among young people to embrace a shift towards smart different and new, so Demetri Martin is the man arrives at just the right moment. "

5th Although our class clown growing up. The ever-charming celeb-punking Ashton Kutcher is putting his contagious energy and multi-tasking mind to good use. He recently announced his commitment to end human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children through his Presidential Pledge. Kutcher has since met hundreds of fellow celebrities to make commitments of their own, and continues to encourage us all to be the change. He is even using his newfound social media presence to help sick children.

Brains are back. Fiscal responsibility, environment, war in Iraq, human rights, poverty, health – these are all forced to stay top-of-mind. Take your pick, because there is a mountain of work to do. We can no longer afford the luxury of ignorance or keep wait a second do the job. Sure, we're still going to dance with the stars and keep Britney stabilized at the top of our Yahoo searches (we Americans after all), but we will do our homework.

Laura developed a love for creating positive social change while earning a BA in Sociology and Social Services at the University of California, Davis. Her work history is based on doing good, working and volunteering with animals and being a nursing assistant for the elderly and disabled while honing her writing skills and gaining experience as a freelance copy writer for small businesses. After living and traveling across the globe, she’s decided to settle down in the Bay Area and combine her desire to make a difference, her skills as a wordsmith and her gift of gab to spread the word about Tonic. http://www.tonic.com
