L’Avare – a Satirical Comedy by French Playwright Molière

Charlottetown, the capital of PEI, is famous for being the “Birthplace of Confederation.” This charming city is a popular tourist destination. With its Victorian-era homes and buildings, as well as scenic walking trails and beautiful parks, Charlottetown is an attractive city.
As well, Charlottetown is home to many amazing attractions. The Confederation Centre of the Arts provides live theatre including the Charlottetown Festival. This annual event (open from June 17-October 9) features professional musical theatre, free outdoor performances with the Young Company, as well as French and bilingual performances. Visitors can also enjoy concerts, gallery exhibitions, local delicacies, and PEI shops.
‘Anne of Green Gables – The Musical’ (TM) – opening for the 46th consecutive year in 2010 – is Canada’s longest-running musical and a standard for PEI festivalgoers. Norman and Elaine Campbell and Don Harron prepared this musical version of “Anne of Green Gables.” The production was broadcast originally in 1956 on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a television movie.
Since 1965, the musical has been performed on a continuing basis. ‘Anne of Green Gables – The Musical’ (TM) has played to audiences in Japan, London, and New York and has been translated into Japanese and Swedish. Â ’Anne’ fans can never leave PEI without seeing this musical. They will get another opportunity to see this marvelous performance at Charlottetown Festival 2010.
In addition, ‘The Last Resort’ and ‘Sexy Laundry’ (both plays written by Canadian playwrights) are on the playbill. This year, the Charlottetown Festival will also have the Broadway productions – ‘Hairspray’ – the winner of eight Tony awards – as well as Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story.
Charlottetown Festival 2010 showcases Prince Edward Island talent with ‘Abegweit: The Soul of the Island’ – the Young Company production featured at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This marvelous display of song and dance is suitable for the whole family. The Young Company performs their live, 45-minute free concert, Monday to Saturday, at noon, in the outdoor amphitheatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts (July 2 through August 21).
This year’s entertainment at the Charlottetown Festival also includes the debut of a theatrical training camp with the Island Children’s Theatre and its feature production – “Peter and the Wolf.” The Island Standup Showcase makes its debut at ‘The Mack’ bringing late night comedy to the stage. The finest in French entertainment is at Charlottetown Festival 2010 with a percussion and humor trio from Quebec, singer-songwriter Mario Robichaud, and an energetic dance party with Glamour Puss.
