Cirque du Soleil - Quidam

Cirque du Soleil – Quidam

$4.99

When Cirque du Soleil first ventured beyond Canada’s borders, its powerful, singularly ambitious “reinvention of the circus” seemed quixotic. Inspired by European precedents, this was a big top downsized to a more intimate, single ring, as the French-Canadian troupe jettisoned animals, banished the usual fright-wigged clowns in favor of funny folks versed in (gulp) pantomime, and focused on acrob…

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 6

$24.36

Fifteen cartoons dating from World War II give Volume 6 of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection more focus than previous sets. Many of the 1940’s cartoons remain very funny. Bugs Bunny dresses up as Brunnhilda and rides in to the strains of “Tannhauser” in “Herr Meets Hare” (1945), a gag Chuck Jones re-used to greater effect in “What’s Opera, Doc” a dozen years later. In “Russian Rhapsody” (1940…

The Best Comedy Films Of All Time

British Comedy has delivered some of the funniest movies of all time. There are so many, that it was hard to narrow the list down to the top 7. When making a list like this, it is almost inevitable that some great movies will be left off, and it is also guaranteed that you won’t agree with every conclusion. With that disclaimer, let’s dive into the top 7 comedy films of all time.

1. Monty Python and The Holy Grail

It would be impossible not to include this film. Although filmed in Scotland on an extremely low budget, the comedy team from Monty Python’s Flying Circus delivered laughs from beginning to end.

2. A Fish Called Wanda

This 1988 film, written and directed by John Cleese and Charles Crichton, takes place following the aftermath of a jewel heist. Widely acclaimed, A Fish Called Wanda picked up numerous Academy Awards. It was so funny that a doctor reportedly laughed so hard that he died of a heart attack in 1989 while watching this film.

3. Shaun of the Dead

This 2004 film turns the zombie genre on its head. Although set amongst the backdrop of an apocalyptic zombie takeover, this film actually follows more closely the plot of a romantic comedy – a genre that it also lampoons.

4. The Wrong Trousers

There may not have been a better comedy duo in the history of cinema than Wallace and Gromit. Although their success continues to this day, this 1993 film may have been their best ever.

5. Monty Python and the Life of Brian

Although there is already a Monty Python film on this list, this one was too good to not include. Possibly the most irreverent film of all time, it follows a man named Brian in Biblical times, who is mistaken as the Saviour. Several countries banned it for many years, prodding the Pythons to proclaim “So Funny, it was Banned in Norway!”

6. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

This 1964 film put the fear-mongering of nuclear threats into perspective and got people laughing about it instead. Peter Sellers continues his tradition of portraying a number of characters, and the laughs don’t stop as the protagonists attempt to prevent the evil communists from corrupting their “precious bodily fluids”.

7. Bean

Based on the successful television series Mr. Bean, this full-length film was released in 1997. Played by Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean travels to America and encounters one series of hijinks after another.

So there you have it, the top 7 British Comedies of all time. Do you agree? What would you add?

A Flair for Comedy
Patty Gallagher will not be taking the summer off from teaching or heading out of town to add to her acting resume.
I’m a huge fan of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Does this mean I have bad taste in humor?

My dad, my one friend, my lonely teacher and I are the only people that I know of who like the Pythons. Everyone that I tell I like to them says I’m stupid and should like what they call “real comedy.” What do you think? Do I really not have any sense of comedy because I like them?

Not at all. If your ear can discern syllables from the depressed/suppressed inflection of the British adverbs, I would say you are above average in good taste.

Repeat:
This parrot is not DEAD.

Whereas the yanks come across as:
This parrot IS NOT dead.

you can clearly see which voice-cee gives cause and effect for eye gouging.
