George Carlin – Saving the Planet

As we begin to fill out automatic bids with conference tournament champions, fans around the country are wondering if their team will give them the chance to use NCAA Tournament tickets. It’s always a question without a clear answer until the selection committee reveals its choices, but below we’ll take a look at a few teams on the proverbial “bubble” to see if they’ll be dancing over the next couple of weeks.

Clemson is the first team that warrants a look. It’s surprising that the Tigers are on this list, as they were the last major conference team to lose their first game this season. However, they have struggled in the ACC with a 7-9 record, and the conference isn’t considered as dominant as it has been in recent years. The Tigers face Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament, and it appears that the winner of that game has a decent chance to get a bid, while the loser may be headed to the NIT.

Florida State is another team on the cusp of 20 wins, and this is also a team that beat Florida earlier in the year. The Seminoles have also struggled with a 7-9 ACC record, and they have no other big-time non-conference wins to their credit. As stated above, the upcoming game against Clemson could be a quasi NCAA Tournament game.

West Virginia has 20 wins already, but they really have no huge wins to show for themselves outside of a victory at home against UCLA, who didn’t have their starting PG at the time. Pundits are predicting seven teams from the Big East will get invited, and West Virginia, as of now, appears to be eighth in the pecking order. They’ll need to make a run in the Big East Tournament to ensure their fans of a chance to get NCAA Tournament tickets.

Illinois has been a national power in recent years, but they could be on the outside looking in on Selection Sunday despite a 21-10 record. The Illini have no big-time wins on their schedule, and their non-conference victims include lightly regarded teams such as Bradley and Missouri.

Every year, there are a few surprises on both sides of the selection issue. The most controversial at-large bid last year was extended to George Mason, and all they did was make a run to the Final Four. There will also be teams that feel that they were unjustly excluded from the field, and that will no doubt be the case once again this year. A lot of teams’ fates will come down to how many surprises there are in conference tournaments, but the teams above need to notch at least one or two more wins to bolster their position. Regardless of who gets in, NCAA Tournament tickets will feature a wide-open field in 2007.

I like “seven words”. I also really liked him as Mr. Conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine, my kids watched that when they were little. My favorite role he ever played was as Rufus in the Bill and Ted movies.
