It’s A Wonderful Life $1.94 Now perhaps the most beloved American film, It’s a Wonderful Life was largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through repeated TV showings. Frank Capra’s masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. The Weekend Before The Summer Blockbusters
Everyone wants a make a Hollywood blockbuster for the summer season each year, but the fact remains, there’s only so many weeks that movies of this type can be released. Most films have to shoot for other advantageous times of the year, often centered around big holidays like Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Christmas. Some movies, however, will take whatever weekend they can get, even the weekend before the summer blockbuster season officially gets underway. Historically, this is not a good weekend for new releases.
So, what’s the problem with opening a new movie the weekend before the first weekend of the Hollywood summer blockbuster season? Essentially, you’ve got one week to get what you’re going to get, and if your films isn’t a strong one chances are you’ll quickly slip into oblivion because every kid and their dog will be at the big, big, really big film the following weekend. In this case, everything’s about to get wiped out by the premier of Iron Man 2 on May 7th.
In the meantime, two new movies did open this weekend to fairly mediocre numbers. The family comedy Furry Vengeance, starring Brendan Fraser, opened to very sluggish numbers, finishing in 5th place with $6.5 million in box office receipts. Probably not what the good people at Summit Entertainment had in mind. Expect this one on DVD sooner than later.
The other new film this weekend was the highly anticipated A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is being touted as a re-imaging of the original from 1984. At $32.2 million it can’t be called a great opening weekend, but it did shine in a few categories. It was a new high for horror films in either April or May (October is horror month), surpassing The Amityville Horror in 2005.
Nearly half of the film’s overall box office take happened on Friday, which is typically a bad sign for movies. As mentioned above, it’s a bad weekend for movies in general. Overall, the entire weekend was down. How To Train Your Dragon was in the #2 spot with nearly $11 million in box office receipts, but even that was down 30% from the week before. Date Night was also down almost 30% in the #3 spot with $7.6 million for the weekend, and The Back-Up Plan was off 40% from the week before with receipts of only $7.2 million.
For a great selection of movies, you just can’t go wrong with DIRECTV. With more than 16,000 movies each month on Direct TV channels and services, is it any wonder that more people are switching to affordable satellite TV deals from DIRECTV?

If the Oscars were a game of golf, Hollywood would be stuck in a sand trap on the ninth hole. by George Prentice If the Oscars were a game of golf, Hollywood would be stuck in a sand trap on the ninth hole.
