The Singing Nun [VHS]

The Singing Nun [VHS]

$5.77

One of the unlikeliest pop stars of the 1960s gets the bio treatment in The Singing Nun, a fictionalized account of the Belgian nun dubbed “Soeur Sourire” (Sister Smile). The cute tone is regrettable, and it’s difficult to adjust to Debbie Reynolds in a habit, but the movie isn’t bad for its kind. It’s the light version of The Nun’s Story, with Hollywood conflicts substituted for spiritual angst. …

Preacher's Wife [VHS]

Preacher’s Wife [VHS]

$5.22

This tedious remake of the classic Christmas movie The Bishop’s Wife falls on its face by significantly altering the careful design of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert E. Sherwood’s story for the original film. In Sherwood’s version, a rather wooden, inept bishop and his lonely wife unknowingly take into their lives a heaven-sent angel who aids the former and ends up falling in love with the l…

“Act of Kindness” – Debut album from Dan Bruder

I was not sure what to expect from Act of Kindness. This guy, Dan Bruder just popped up on the music scene through his web-based rock comedy series “Who the Hell is Dan Bruder” and out of it rolled this album.

But having a web TV hit is a far cry from having the right to be called a music sensation. However, Bruder turns out to be a compelling song writer and lyricist who has clearly delivered a worthy debut collection of Americana rock tunes that have hints of Tom Petty and Springsteen (he can’t help it he is from NJ) but in a new fresh way. The production is pretty good and the performances of the musicians are very good as expected. Bruders vocals are scratchy and rough, but it is forgivable because he is full of legitimate energy that is very entertaining.

Songs like “Song for a Lucky Man” are rivetting from first note to last and well produced, well written and very well executed, while other songs like “Act of Kindness” (the title track) are incredibly well written songs with less than stellar productions but grabbed ne none-the-less because they get the point across very well without fancy bells or whistles on production.

The guitar work by David Biglin is phenomenal and Devon Allman gives a very worthy contribution as well. Lorenza Ponce is just a class act on violin and Liberty Devitto proves why he is ranked as one of the all time greatest drummers (Billy Joel was a fool to let him go!). John GInty brings a soulful vibe to the album that is like a hip glue that holds it together and Muddy Shews does his job on bass very well. I wish I could be more critical but it is difficult because this album hits the mark quite well. I recommend getting this one.

Which is your favorite comedy album?

It could be by one comedian or a compilation of the works of several comedians.
My fave so far is a CD named: Hey, That’s Funny! Comedy’s Greatest Hits.
It’s several comedians doing great routines–you gotta hear Albert Brooks do “Rewriting the National Anthem.” Pretty good. My fave track on the album.

25 Years of Comedy (probably out of print now)

Part of it was put in my high school’s media center back in the early ’80s. It had “The Argument Clinic”by Monty Python, “The Astronaut” by Bill Dana, and other great routines.

One interesting thing…the school would not play the section by Richard Pryor, but they did play “Religions Inc.” by Lenny Bruce.

Hmmm…
